What is PAC?

Are you reading this page with your reading or multifocal glasses? Or you need to read closely without glasses on?

Find out what OPTIMAX can do now to restore hassle free vision for you!
The muscles around the lens in the human eye help to control the focusing power of the lens. When we age, the muscles become weaker and the lens thickens and hardens. This will reduce the ability of the eye to focus near object. This condition is known as “presbyopia” or “old-age reading problem”. The traditional way to correct this problem  is to use reading or multifocal glasses.

Now, there is a better alternative!

OPTIMAX has an advanced software called PAC(Pseudo-Accommodative Cornea) to help you overcome this problem. OPTIMAX is the only eye laser centre that offers this breakthrough refractive surgery procedure in Malaysia.

How does PAC work?

The PAC is a specific software that can treat presbyopia by using the NIDEK EC5000 Excimer Laser machine. PAC uses the multizone laser ablation concept to create ‘multifocal’ cornea in order to help the eye to ‘restore’ the focusing ability for near vision and treat the distance power at the same time. This means PAC can treat anyone with long-sightedness, short-sightedness or astigmatism and prebyopia simultaneously.
This means that the overall vision after your laser refractive surgery will continue to be useful even as your eyes age.

The final shape of the cornea is what Doctors called a prolate cornea, which has a flatter area in the center of the cornea (giving good distance vision), and a gradual change of shape outwards, (giving good near vision).
More than 80% of patients do not use reading spectacles after having presby LASIK. The others need occasional use of lower power reading glasses.

During your consultation, you can discuss this option with your doctor, and together decide upon the best choice for you.

"Patients normally have good vision the next day after the treatment. Those undertaking presbyopia treatment will have stabilized vision after two to three weeks, and achieve best vision after one month. With proper screening or patients, rate of complication is close to zero," said Dr. Alain Telandro of Advanced Vision Laser Center.

FAQ

What does PAC stands for?

PAC is derived from Pseudo Accommodative Cornea. PAC is software used in the NAVEX Laser. This allows distance & near vision at the same time, even for people above 40 years-old.

Is PAC done on both eyes and one eye only?

Depends on the suitability of the patient.

Will I be able to read very small print after PAC? How fast is the healing?

No, very small print may not be easily readable after PAC.Healing takes about 3-6 months. Low power reading glasses may be necessary for very small print.

Do I still need glasses to read after PAC when I get older?

When you get older it is possible that you may require a pair of thinner reading glasses for fine prints.

What is Presbyopia?

Presbyopia is an aging process of all human eyes. The eye muscles become less flexible,so that reading small print at near becomes difficult.

If I have Glaucoma, will PAC help me?

No.

If I had PRK and LASIK 10 years ago, now can I have PAC since I now need reading glasses?

Yes, but must recheck corneal thickness and suitability again.

Doctor told me I have cataract, can I still do PAC?

It depends on the severity of the cataract. Some patients may still be able to proceed if their vision is not affected.
